subjunctive mood

 The subjunctive mood is a verb form that expresses a desire, assumption, doubt, or unreality of performing an action.

If I were there I should ring you up.
Если бы я был там, я бы позвонил тебе.
 
I wish she would win the game.
Мне бы хотелось, чтобы она выиграла игру.

If I knew her address we should write to her.
Если бы я знал её адрес, мы бы написали ей.

It is necessary that he should go there.
Необходимо, чтобы он поехал туда.

the subjunctive mood can be expressed either with only one verb (were, wish, knew) — this is the so-called synthetic form, or with the auxiliary verb + infinitive without the particle to (should ring, would win, should write) - this is the analytical form.

It is necessary that he start there immediately. (синтетическая форма )
Необходимо, чтобы он отправился туда немедленно.

It’s a pity you can’t come tomorrow. He would help you. (аналитическая форма)
Жаль, что вы не можете прийти завтра. Он помог бы вам.

I wish he would pass his examinations. (аналитическая форма )
Мне бы хотелось, чтобы он сдал экзамены.

It is impossible that he should have done it.
(аналитическая форма)
Не может быть, чтобы он сделал это.

The subjunctive mood Subjunctive I (synthetic form) is used in a simple sentence and in the main and subordinate clauses of a complex sentence (in the main - with a conditional subordinate clause expressing an unreal condition).

The subjunctive mood Subjunctive II (analytical form) is used in the subordinate clause of a compound sentence.
